Job Description Summary
Applies principles of nutrition in monitoring nutritional status of hospital patients. Assures that appropriate nutrition intervention occurs. Approves definitions of modified diets and patient menus as prescribed by the Medical Staff for patients with therapeutic diet needs. Provides instructions concerning therapeutic diets for patients and family.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. B.S. or advanced degree in foods, nutrition or food service administration, completion of AND approved internship program and current registry by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

2. Current license by the West Virginia Board of Licensed Dietitians.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:

1. One (1) year experience as a clinical dietitian in a health care facility.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Observes for physical signs of nutritional deficiency per stand of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

2. Evaluates anthropometric data for height and weight and changes in height and weight.

3. Evaluates lab data with nutritional significance vs UHC' lab standards.

4. Obtains and evaluates diet history information for nutritional significance. Areas to evaluate include appetite and intake, food allergies or intolerances, chewing or swallowing difficulties, feeding independence, supplements (liquid, vitamin/mineral), eating patterns, food preferences and estimate of daily intake.

5. Calculates patient specific energy requirements.

6. Calculates patient specific protein requirements.

7. Calculates patient specific vitamin/mineral requirements.

8. Places orders for supplements from Pharmacy or Kitchen per patient need and diet therapy.

9. Completes nutrition assessment in EMR

10. Completes assessments in a timely manner per policy.

11. Completes UTCC Assessment, MDS, CAA's and Care Plans per policy.

12. Documents in CBORD card file as needed for each patient.

13. Documents patient NPO/CL for 5 days in medical record.

14. Effectively instructs patients/family members on diet for home by obtaining appropriate diet history information, combining diet information into one form for multiple diet restrictions, assessing knowledge after teaching, and following up before patient discharge when possible. Tailors teaching to specific needs of patient including visually impaired patients, stroke patients, etc.

15. Follows clinical dietitian and UHC customer service standards.

16. Participates in approval of diet manual every 3 years.

17. Calculates special diet patterns.

18. Calculates TF/TPN requirements.

19. In presence of MNT Protocol, makes diet therapy adjustments as needed.

20. Recommends best nutritional supplement to physician/staff.

21. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

22. Supports other departments through programs such as Oncology with "It's All About You", Family Medicine with in-services, UTCC with quarterly QA meetings and daily huddles, CC rounds, Oncology Multidisciplinary meeting.

23. Participates in Hospital Committees such as Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee, Cancer Committee, etc.

24. Efficiently organizes/prioritizes daily task list.

25. Works with co-dietitians to share the daily work load.

26. Completes nutrition therapy daily log.

27. Completes work within established policy time frames.

1. Must visit ill patients in their rooms.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Must have ability to follow oral and written instructions.

2. Must have basic math skills including addition and subtraction.

3. Basic computer skills required. Must be able to learn EMR, CBORD, MATRIX CARE, etc.

4. Concentrated mental activity is required to organize the work.

5. Must be able to respond to changes in work volume throughout the shift.

6. Must be able to work Saturdays and some holidays. May need to attend a meeting in the evening on occasion.

7. Must be able to interact with co-workers, patients, family and other members of the medical team in a positive manner.
