The focus of this position is to prepare for and assist with surgical procedure, providing necessary instruments, supplies and equipment according to hospital policy and routine of the surgeon. Following the procedure, assist with the decontamination and cleaning related to surgical procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.High School Diploma or equivalent

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.Nursing Assistant Certification

2.Graduate of a vocational school for surgical technicians

EXPERIENCE:

1. Previous experience in a healthcare setting/OR setting

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.They are not intended to be constructed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties.Other duties may be assigned.

1. Assists the surgeon in preparing the pre-operative site and drapes according to procedure.

2. During the surgical procedure, passes to the surgeon appropriate instruments, suture, sponges, drains and dressings in such a manner as to insure medical and surgical asepsis and safety to patient. Any break in sterile field results in the appropriate notification of the surgical team and is corrected.

3. Prior to the procedure participates in the final verification process to confirm patient, procedure and site ("time-out").

4. Count needles, sponges, and instruments with circulating nurse pre-incision, at closure of peritoneum and at skin closure.

5. Acts as assistant to surgeon during surgery.

6. Assists with completion of inventory, rotation of items and inspects for outdates, Assists with inventory and maintenance of prescribed levels of sterile and non-sterile supplies for the surgical department. Assist with ordering basic supplies and department forms.

7. Decontamination and processing instruments and rooms. Assists with receiving, examining, sorting, cleaning and decontaminating of surgical instruments.

8. Maintain the general surgical areas in a clean and orderly condition.

9. Uses cleaning chemicals correctly. Knows the location of the MSDS forms and how to read and apply the information.

10. Assists with preparing surgical items for sterilization assists with loading and operating of sterilization equipment in the OR.

11. Assists with monthly inventory and other assigned clerical duties.

12. Assists with transfer and positioning of patients using correct techniques and body mechanics.

13. Maintains compliance with hospital policies and procedures, including but not limited to patient rights, confidentiality, safety and infection control.

14. Demonstrates understanding of the special needs of the population served (i.e. growth and development, aging process)

1. Requires prolonged standing, sitting and walking.

2. Must be able to carry 40 lbs. 50 feet.

3. Requires full range of body motion with ability to turn, lift and transfer patients and equipment.

4. Requires full manual finger dexterity and normal eye-hand coordination.

5. Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal range.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1. Work performed in hospital operating suite setting.

2. This position generally works weekdays, with a rotating call schedule for nights and weekends.

3. Exposure to toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and different types of cleaning chemicals. Exposure to communicable diseases and body fluids.

4. Must wear surgical attire including gown, mask, gloves, etc. for extended periods of time.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Must be able to work well in a stressful environment as a part of a team.

2. Works with direction to effectively carry out the varied responsibilities of this position.

3. Must be able to demonstrated flexibility in response to changes in work volume, staff and scheduling changes. Must be able to take call for the OR and respond to emergency needs within a pre-determined amount of time.

4. Must have an understanding of and adherence to Infection Control policies and procedures.

5. Must be respectful and protect the privacy of each patient.

6.

Ability to plan, organize and prioritize one's time to maximize personal efficiency and meet deadlines.
