Works with the medical team to provide optimal medical nutrition therapy to all patients including infants, pediatrics, adults and geriatrics. Functions as a team leader to the nutritional therapy support team (Nutrition Care Assistants-NCA's and/or others). Monitors Dietetic Interns in assigned rotations and teaches intern classes. Works with other members of the department to improve food service and quality care to patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Registration Eligible with the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.

2. Passes Registration examination 6 months from hire date.

3. Provisionally Licensure through the West Virginia Board of Licensed Dietitians required at hire.

4. Earns an average of 10 CEU's per year.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:

1. Completion of a dietetic internship preferred.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Provide comprehensive high quality medical nutrition therapy to patients. All notes in the medical record will be reviewed by the CNM or assigned RD.

2. Complete physician ordered consults and instructions according to standards of care and document in medical record. Contact the physician regarding any concerns, recommendations, etc.

3. Document NPO/Clear Liquid notes by day five; follow-up every two days until nutrition provided (unless contraindicated).

4. Complete and document calorie counts accurately. Document summary of calorie counts within 24 hours of completion if results warrant nutritional recommendations.

5. Calculate and report results of nitrogen balance and metabolic cart studies accurately and in a timely manner.

6. Complete and document nutrition assessments on high-risk patients according to standards of care; including but not limited to: appropriateness of diet to diagnosis, adequacy of current tube feeding, infant formula; assessment of laboratory values, drug-nutrient interactions, medical history, current nutritional needs, nutrition education needs, and care plan.

7. Complete and document follow-up to assessments and consults according to standards.

8. Provide coverage for other units when another dietitian is absent. Follows priority list for all units (i.e., consults done on all units before routine assessments are done on assigned units).

9. Effectively communicate with nursing, medical and other hospital staff to ensure high quality nutritional care. Attends rounds, discharge planning and care plan conferences as needed.

10. Attend meetings/conferences that physicians request dietitian attendance or those meetings/conferences required to maintain accreditation of hospital programs or foster partnership with other facilities.

11. With guidance and input of the CNM or Assigned RD, provide guidance and supervise daily activities of nutritional therapy support team, i.e., difficult or unusual diet orders, tube feeding calculations, infant formula calculations. Document potential/actual errors or harmful interactions with patients or staff committed by NCA's on assigned units where appropriate (i.e., personnel file, medical record, etc.) Provide intervention and participate in disciplinary actions as appropriate.

12. Work with Nurse Managers and nursing staff on assigned units to improve medical nutrition therapy to the patient, including diet texture changes, providing appropriate foods/texture for aspiration risk (also work with speech pathologist), timing of medications to prevent drug-nutrient interactions, etc.

13. Act on any patient food complaints, provide alternative selections and/or arrangements. Follow-up with appropriate managers on food quality issues.

14. Conduct patient meal rounds at least 5-7 patients per week, to determine adequacy of nutritional intake and to assess acceptability of meals and service.

15. The CNM or assigned RD will review and give input to any group education prior to presentation. As requested, develop and present in-services to other health care personnel, food service personnel, and students.

16. As requested, develop and present lectures to community groups with input and review of the CNM.

17. In-service Dietitians on information from any educational meetings attended.

18. RD eligible employees will not serve as preceptors to dietetic interns until one year post credentialing.

SUPERVISION:

1. Registration eligible clinical dietitian will have all work monitored by the Clinical Nutrition Manager or assigned Registered Dietitian until the registration exam is passed, then quarterly monitoring of performance and supervision of patient care by Clinical Nutrition Manager (CNM) as needed. RD eligible employees are not permitted to accept verbal orders, place MNT protocol orders or place parenteral nutrition orders. These tasks must be completed by an assigned RD/LD.

1. Majority of work is Performed in patient care units. Some office, classroom and meeting room work. Occasional community speaking.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Ability to speak in front of a group. Professional appearance and demeanor; Ability to utilize strong organizational and time management skills to meet established goals and objectives; Good verbal and written communication skills.

2. Majority of work is performed under deadline pressure, which is often stressful

3. Requires the ability to teach individuals (patients) as well as classes (interns, public, other professionals, food service workers). Requires use of EPIC computer system along with basic computer programs such as Word, Excel and Power Point. Requires ability to use paging system, beeper and phone.

4. Ability to understand written and oral communication.
