Construction Materials Engineering Technician

Are you located near the state borders of eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and/or southwestern Pennsylvania and have experience with construction materials testing? S&ME is seeking a full-time Construction Materials Engineering Technician who is looking for an opportunity to work remotely and independently managing all testing documentation and responsibilities for the construction projects throughout the area of these 3 bordering states. You will be assigned a company vehicle and report directly to the project sites. No in-office work is required. All the tools and resources will be available to you to work remotely in this area.


What You Will Do:

As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, your daily field testing ensures compliance with industry standards, documenting the proper use of materials like soil, concrete, rebar, asphalt, and aggregate in construction projects. You'll also have the opportunity to learn geosynthetic work such as membrane liners, geotextiles, geocomposites, clay liners for landfills, and more. You'll need to be comfortable working independently, managing your own time, communicating with our team in the Columbus, Ohio office, and responsible for conducting the field testing contributing to the success of all projects in the area, ensuring everything is "built right."

  • Review plans and specifications in preparation for field observations on construction sites
  • Test soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry mortar/grout for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and/or project specifications
  • Record field activities, observations, and test results to ensure materials pass project specifications.
  • Use tools like Metafield for daily recording
  • Communicate daily with management staff, general contractors, and clients
  • Calibrate equipment to meet industry standards

What You Need:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing), using the English language
  • Ability to complete data entry into multiple software applications on a smart device
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to routinely lift 40-50 lbs, such as maneuvering a loaded wheelbarrow on uneven terrain or loading/unloading concrete cylinders
  • ACI, NICET or DOT certifications are a plus.
