6:00am to 2:30 pm; Monday - Friday (varies during the year) summer hrs.
6:30am to 3:00pm Monday -Friday winter hrs.
This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Advanced level Supervisor insures that crew members work safely, comply with safety, department and campus policies while continually performing work in a productive and efficient manner. Oversees, assigns and performs work with a crew of Grounds Workers and/or General Utility Workers in landscape/turf maintenance. Performs as the front-line Grounds Staff member to provide Landscape and Horticultural care to new and renovated landscapes throughout Campus.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and one year of experience in the area assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from high school and five years experience in the area of work assigned, three of which were in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Essential Job Duties
  • Make decisions that affect the campus landscape maintenance and landscape improvements focused on a more formal and manicured campus landscape.
  • Grade, prepare and renovate lawn areas for grass and seed/sod; install sod, reseed established lawn areas and newly developed lawns as required.
  • Plan daily or weekly work to meet established objectives.
  • Meet with supervisor formally on a daily basis to schedule and plan work activities.
  • Plan daily or weekly work to meet established objectives.
  • Observe, inspect, and monitor quality and quantity of work while in process and upon completion.
  • On-site direction of Grounds Workers and General Utility Workers as well as skilled labor contractors.
  • Provide operational support and continuous onsite Leadership for the zone maintenance effort at the crew level.
  • One year plant and bed maintenance after planting projects
  • Plant production of annuals and perennials
  • Responsible for budgeting over $300,000 annually on new and renovated landscape installs and projects.
Other Work Responsibilities
  • Operate machines and equipment's such as trucks, tractors water wagons and other gardening and grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Operate power equipment such as bed edgers, hedge trimmers, hand auger, sod roller.
  • May apply fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides either occasionally or on a normal periodic basis.
  • Attend all training opportunities provided to increase technical grounds, maintenance, and supervisory skills.
  • Cultivate, mulch, and remove weeds from established plant beds; prune shrubs and trees to ensure proper health and vigor of plant material.

  • During the interview, demonstrates they have the ability to and / or have the experience to explain how to plant or show how to grow the production of annuals and perennials.
  • During the interview, demonstrates they have the ability to and / or have the experience to show how they would be responsible for assisting in managing & budgeting over $300,000 annually on new and renovated landscape installs and projects.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid NC Drivers license
  • Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification
  • Certified plant professional certificate or obtain in 2 years
  • N.C. landscape contractor's license or obtain in 2 years
