Senior Manager, Project Management
American Public Education Inc.

American Public Education, Inc. (APEI) seeks a seasoned and dynamic Senior Manager to lead our Project Management Office (PMO). The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing large-scale projects and programs and strong leadership and strategic planning skills.

The position directly reports to the VP of EPMO. This position has direct reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement the PMO's strategic direction in alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Portfolio Management: Oversee the portfolio of projects and programs within the organization, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and resource optimization.
  • Governance and Compliance: Establish and maintain project management governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with organizational standards and regulations.
  • Executive Reporting: Provide regular updates and reports to senior leadership on the status of projects, key performance indicators, and risks.
  • Resource Management: Allocate resources effectively across projects and programs to optimize productivity and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Change Management: Lead change management efforts to drive the adoption of project management methodologies, tools, and best practices across the organization.
  • Risk Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks to minimize potential impacts on project outcomes and organizational objectives.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement quality management processes and standards to ensure the delivery of high-quality project outcomes that meet stakeholder expectations.
  • Talent Development: Mentor and coach project managers and PMO staff to enhance their skills, capabilities, and professional development.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders at all levels of the organization to ensure alignment of project objectives with business goals
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in project management, with at least five years in a leadership role within a PMO.
  • Experience in business process development, reengineering, budgeting, resource allocation, and administrative operations.
  • Demonstrated success partnering across business functions to drive project implementation.
  • Experience leading project teams in a high-performance, customer-centric culture focused on service, innovation, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Basic knowledge of project accounting.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite products, including Project, TFS, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing large-scale projects and programs with significant business impact.
  • Strong leadership and strategic planning skills with the ability to drive change and innovation within the organization.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Deep understanding of project management methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Experience in portfolio management, resource optimization, and governance frameworks.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve project goals.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Solid understanding of project management methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Experience in process improvement and change management initiatives.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or business administration is preferred. Advanced degree in either field preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent preferred.
