GENERAL OVERVIEW

The Staff Nurse is a registered nurse who will primarily work in the Adult Psychiatry Injection Clinic, a clinical service which offers administration of injectable medications used in the treatment of substance use disorders and psychiatric diagnoses. The Staff Nurse, as primary nurse in the clinic, is responsible and accountable for the overall nursing care management of the patients seen in the Injection Clinic, including delegation to and supervision of non-professional and support staff at times. The Staff Nurse collaborates with the Medical Director of Outpatient Care, the Group Practice Administrator and members of the Patient Care Team to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The Staff Nurse also collaborates with the patient toward efficient and effective personnel and unit management.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Staffing the injection clinic: Safely administers medications and escalated concerns or assessments of patient response to the prescribing provider, accurately completes nursing documentation in EPIC according to policy and procedure, understands end-of-visit and follow-up process/procedures, ensures the clinic is in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards to ensure a safe care environment, supports and educates patients in self-management, care coordination, medication reconciliation and safety
  • Implements the individualized plan of care through the use of evidence-based protocols and guidelines and in collaboration with treating providers
  • Coordinates with other members of the health team, including treating providers, social work, nutrition, and community resources
  • Coordinates involvement of the patient, family and health team members in patient care, including patient/family teaching and care planning
  • Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other health team members
  • Collaborates with other professionals and directs nonprofessional nursing personnel in maintaining recognized standards
  • Participates in orientation of new permanent and temporary staff members in the Injection Clinic
  • Appropriately utilizes nursing resources.
  • Interprets hospital and departmental policies and procedures to nurses and other health team members
  • Participates in daily operational activities necessary for safe patient/staff environment
  • Utilizes resources efficiently to facilitate optimal patient care
  • Provides input to Group Practice Administrator regarding unit needs and works collaboratively with administration to address these needs
  • Participates in inspections of clinical space and clinical workflow review
  • Participates in unit and departmental committees for formulation of nursing and hospital policies and procedures
  • May provide nursing support in other services in the outpatient psychiatry clinic as time permits

SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Clinical Knowledge:

  • Experience in mental health and ambulatory nursing including basic clinical knowledge of psychopharmacotherapy and commonly prescribed medications, their side effects and expected outcomes
  • Knowledge of Community mental health center/ambulatory care environment
  • Telephone-based mental health clinical assessment techniques
  • Telephone triage principles
  • Clinical familiarity with care coordination principles and experience working on mulit-disciplinary care teams
  • Ability to evaluate a clinical situation, draw accurate conclusions, and independently make appropriate and timely decisions within the scope of practice for a Registered Nurse.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to prioritize effectively and complete tasks.
  • Flexibility to manage multiple tasks and referral volume.


Leadership:

  • Highly motivated, independent and capable of performing in a busy, complex clinical environment.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program
  • New graduates must have a BSN degree
